Welcome to The Perfect Divot. I have been playing golf for a little more than 30 years. As with anything that we do part-time, our skill goes up and down depending on how often are able to play and focus on what we are actually doing. Of course our main goal in playing golf is to have a good time with our friends and enjoy the outdoors.
What I hope to do here at The Perfect Divot is to provide some insight on how the average golfer can better his/her game. I am sure you will agree that hitting that one perfect shot will bring you back again and again.
A Bit About My Start in Golf.
As I mentioned above, I started playing golf when I was 15 years old. Interestingly, I learned to play golf from my friend’s dad who was a lefty. This, you might think, is not that big of a deal except, that I am right-handed. The one benefit of this type of training is that I was able to stand face-to-face with him and see exactly what he was doing while he was swinging. This was actually very helpful to me as I learned the mechanics of my golf swing. The bummer part about this scenario was that I could not just use his clubs. I had to get my own set!
Imagine, I am 15 and pretty much broke. I was willing to take anything I could get. I was talking to my uncle about my newly made plans to buy my own clubs, when he totally shocked me, He said, ‘Look why don’t you take this old bag of clubs I have here and see if they work for you?’
Wow! I couldn’t believe it. This was the best news I had heard all day! It was an old, mismatched, set of clubs with a bag almost as big as a golf cart, but it didn’t matter to me. I was so happy I could have exploded!
I dug the bag and clubs out of his garage and took them straight home, all the while making plans to play golf as soon as possible. Now, these clubs were really old, I had a 3 wood that had a wooden shaft. Really though, it made no difference then as I was just learning. And most importantly, they were mine!
I could not wait to get out on the course to play with my very own clubs. After hacking my way through my first game, I was hooked! I wanted to play every day, which I did, for about 4 or 5 months. Then life hit and I was back to the grind of school, chores, and life in general. I did, however, continue to learn and improve my game over the years.
Help Me, Help You, Help US!
Every hobby or sport takes focus, practice, and determination to get good at it. Most of us do not take up golf because we think we’ll make it to the pros. Let’s be honest, when we all get out on the course, our goal is to de-stress a bit from the hectic life that we are all living every day.
I personally cannot think of another sport you play, where you can drink a beer (or your beverage of choice) while driving a modified go-kart, and having a good time just being with your friends.
Over the years, my uncle and others have supported me to better my game. I want to provide that same support to all who love the game as much as I do.
By the way, I still play golf with my uncle multiple times a year and we live on opposite sides of the country. Every time we play, I learn something new from him.
Golf is a Sport Where You Never Stop Learning.
My goal is to help golfers like myself, who have full and busy lives, and only get to play occasionally. So they can improve their game through instruction and reviews of everything golf. When I find a good deal, I’ll pass it along. If there is a club that is cutting strokes off of your game, I would love to hear about it.
We are here to build a community where golfers of all ranges can come together to help each other figure out how we can improve our skills and enjoyment of the game.
So have a look around, and if you ever have anything to share that will make our game of golf better, I would love to hear from you.
May your chips be straight and your putts be short!
All the best,
Cory
